The Cape Winelands are world-famous for the excellent wines that were developed and produced here. Several kinds of grapes, such as Chenin Blanc, Shiraz and Pinotage grow in that region and the vineyards are happy to welcome visitors to show them around. Stellenbosch, a small city close to Cape Town, is located within the Winelands is not only home to a renowned university, that offers several courses in wine production, but provides many activities related to wine – wine tasting, cellar tours and many more.
Franschhoek, which is a former Huguenots Village, will make you feel like you’re in a French village. Many streets and estates have French names and, just as in France, Franschhoek offers a wonderful choice of Wine and Cheese that can be tasted and purchased. A short stop at Drakenstein, which is a historic prison and en route to the next stop in Paarl, will take you a few years back in South Africa’s rather young history to the time when Nelson Mandela served the last years of his sentence at Drakenstein. The last destination of this Wine Tour is Paarl, which characterized by the Afrikaans culture and language. Beyond that, the city and the surrounding vineyards offer some of the best wines of the Cape region.
